Other than owning a Mac Mini I have never had an Apple desktop computer, that all changed at the start of this year when I purchased my first iMac. Today that same iMac line has now had a power boost thanks to speeds up to 3.06GHz; the more powerful iMac will feature more memory and more powerful Intel Core 2 Duo processors as standard. The big difference I noticed on the iMac’s in comparison to the PC’s I have always had is that the iMac is really just a screen and still packs some very powerful hardware; also Style is the iMacs middle name.
The new $2,200 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo iMac features a 24-inch display; 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS graphics card and the option to increase the hard drive to a full terabyte for $250 extra or $200 more for 4GB of RAM. You’re able to buy the new iMacs from today on Apple’s Store.
What’s impressive is that even the budget 20-inch 2.4 GHz iMac has a 6MB L2 cache and a 1066 MHz front-side bus, all this for just $1,199 or $1,499 for the 2.66 GHz and $1,799 for the 2.8 GHz iMac. As my nice new old iMac has only been purchased this year, I will not be upgrading anytime soon but that’s life, the moment you by some new technology it gets old very fast.
