The highly rumored Samsung i900 is finally unveiled by Samsung. Called Samsung i900 Omnia, this Windows Mobile PocketPC seems as a strong competitor of the rumored 3G iPhone, which should be announced today too. Of course, the feature set puts it head-to-head with HTC Touch Diamond too. However we have the feeling that the HTC TouchFLO 3D might be a bit more spectacular than what the Samsung i900 offers.

Samsung i900 Omnia will be first displayed at the CommunicAsia expo held in Singapore from June 17 to 20 but all details about its specifications are already made public.

Based on Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro, the Samsung i900 offers a 3.2-inch WideQVGA display (240 x 400 pixels) and an optical mouse much like the one found in the Samsung i780. Camera-wise the Samsung i900 Omnia is one helluva amibitious handset - offering a 5 megapixel auto focus snapper with face and smile detection plus auto-panorama shot. Geotagging is also among the camera features since the i900 also packs a built-in GPS receiver.

As style has it, the Samsung i900 Omnia waistline is only 12.5mm and the brushed metal back certainly adds to its refined looks. That figure along with the other dimensions makes it rather identical to the Apple iPhone. Most importantly the i900 shares with the iPhone the same massive internal memory - both an 8GB and a 16GB i900 versions will be available with the microSD still present for further expanding those with up to 16 gigs worth of storage.

The specs sheet of the Samsung i900 is then boosted by the quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support plus HSDPA 7.2Mbps. Thanks to the built-in accelerometer, the UI automatically rotates to follow the handset's current orientation. Wi-Fi support is also on board to make the i900 sound even juicier.

The USB port, FM radio with RDS and stereo Bluetooth (A2DP) are among the final touches to this loaded PocketPC.

And since touch-optimization is of critical importance when you strive to compete with Apple's iPhone, Samsung have also ported their TouchWiz user interface for use on Windows Mobile. We saw that Touch UI for the first time on the Samsung F480 and we surely enjoyed it.

The Samsung i900 Omnia will be market available from June 2008 (Europe - July 2008), which also coincides with the projected availability of the new 3G iPhone.

Samsung L870 unveiled - Symbian smartphone in metal

Yet another Symbian S60 joins the ranks of Samsung high-class sliders. Reminding strongly of the Samsung G810, the Samsung L870 has a great-looking brushed stainless steel body and some capable hardware.

The Samsung L870 is powered by the same Symbian OS and user interface as all Nokia N-series smartphones. This new pup is only 13.5mm in thickness and has a 3 megapixel camera and a 2.4-inch 16M color TFT display with QVGA resolution. Unfortunately we still don't know whether the camera has an auto focus system or not.

The Samsung L870 will have tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support plus HSDPA 3.6Mbps for fast wireless data transfers. Speaking of wireless, the only thing that let us down in the L870 specs sheet is that it lacks Wi-Fi functionality. Pity indeed, since the device is the first Symbian smartphone to have the Safari mobile web browser on board. Whether it's exactly the same browser as in the Apple iPhone is not yet sure. However we should point out that the excellent Symbian S60 3rd edition mobile web browser shares one and the same platform with the iPhone's Safari mobile browser.

Bashed: We received an email from Samsung apologizing for the misunderstanding about the mentioning of the Safari browser in their press release. The Samsung L870 is equipped with the latest version of the S60 web browser and not the Safari mobile browser by Apple. As we already pointed out, the two mobile browser share the same platform.

The Samsung L870 will also host FM radio and Bluetooth and USB connectivity. The internal memory is 100MB and the memory card slot can take a microSD card with a capacity of up to 4GB.

The World's Fastest, Largest Capacity 2.5'' SSD, by Samsung

Samsung announced the development of the world’s fastest, largest capacity 2.5’’ SSD, MLC-based with SATA II interface. It provides a 256GB capacity, with a reading speed of 200MBps and writing speed of 160MBps. It's also very thin, only 9.5mm, and measures 100.3x69.85mm.
Taipei, Taiwan, May 26, 2008 - Samsung Electronics, the world leader in advanced memory technology, announced today that it has developed the world’s fastest, 2.5-inch, 256 Gigabyte (GB) multi-level cell (MLC) based solid state drive (SSD) using a SATA II interface at the fifth annual Samsung Mobile Solution Forum held at the Westin Taipei Hotel. Samsung’s new 256GB SSD is also the thinnest drive with the largest capacity to be offered with a SATA II interface.

With a sequential read speed of 200 megabytes per second (MB/s) and sequential write speed of 160MB/s,
Samsung’s MLC-based 2.5-inch 256GB SSD is about 2.4 times faster than a typical HDD. Furthermore, the new
256 GB SSD is only 9.5millimeters (mm) thick, and measures 100.3x69.85 mm.

Once introduced, the Samsung’s 256GB SSD will mark the largest capacity SSD from the global market leader in SSD sales, effectively eliminating density as a barrier to SSD adoption in the consumer space.

“With development of the 256GB SSD, the notebook PC is on the brink of a second stage of evolution. This change is comparable to the evolution from the Sony Walkman to NAND memory-based MP3 players, representing an initial step in the shift to thinner, smaller SSD-based notebooks with significantly improved performance and more than ample storage,” said Jim Elliott, vice president, memory marketing, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc.

Through major advancements in proprietary controller technology, Samsung’s new MLC 256GB SSD, besides being comparable in speed to an SLC-based SSD, also boasts reliability equal to that of SLC SSDs, with a mean time between failures (MTBF) of one million hours, while costing considerably less. Power consumption is also exceptionally low at 0.9 watts in active mode.

In addition, the drive offers a sophisticated data encryption process that prevents data stored on the SSD from being accessed in an unauthorized manner, even after the SSD is removed from the PC.
Overall, the number of computing units in which SSDs are being offered is expected to increase dramatically once Samsung’s previously announced 128GB SSD and the new 256GB SSD are launched. At present, Samsung is actively involved in high-capacity SSD design-in activities for all of the top PC and server manufacturers from the U.S., Asia, and Europe.

Samsung is expected to begin mass producing the 2.5-inch, 256GB SSD by year end, with customer samples available in September. A 1.8-inch version of the 256GB SSD is expected to be available in the fourth quarter of 2008.

According to a Q1 2008 report by the semiconductor market research firm iSuppli, the SSD market will grow at an annualized average of 124 percent during the four-year period from 2008 until 2012. iSuppli now projects SSD sales to increase by an additional 35 percent in 2009 over what it projected last year, 51 percent more in 2010, and 89% more in 2011, and continue to show dramatic increases in subsequent years.

Samsung Launches BD-P1500 HT-BD2F Blu-Ray Players

Media giant Samsung yesterday announced and launched two new Blu-ray disc players. Can you believe this is already the a fourth generation player, the BD-P1500 and second-generation home theater HT-BD2F. The next-generation Blu-ray disc format offers massive data storage capacity, high-definition video and audio quality, and is now the most likely successor to the DVD format. The Samsung BD-P1500 player can play the original and full screen high-definition versions of CD, DVD, and Blu-ray discs, and sports various functions.

The Bonus View function, for instance, provides information on actors and an actress appearing in a movie as it is played, and with the Bookmark function, a user can easily jump to the scene s/he likes. Samsung decided to use a “5.1-channel” speaker set in its HT-BD2F Blu-ray home theater, scheduled to be launched in May. The 5.1 channel speaker set, comprised of one subwoofer and four surrounding speakers, is popularly used in home entertainment systems.
